Abu Dhabi: India returned to winning ways on Wednesday as they finally opened their account by beating Afghanistan by 66 runs in a do-or-die Super 12 encounter to keep their campaign alive in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. India rode on outstanding performances from Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Ravichandran Ashwin to register their first win of the campaign after 3 games.
The Men in Blue moved up a place above Namibia in fourth position but still need to win their last two games and depend on other results to stand a chance of qualifying for the semifinals. The big win though, helped them improve their net run rate from -1.609 to + 0.073 which will help their chances further.
Afghanistan managed to reach 144 for 7 in 20 overs after India posted 210 for 2, thanks to the swashbuckling half-centuries from openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant also played important cameos to help the team reach their second-highest total in T20 World Cups.
